He uses both history books and findings from archaeology to explore how the Northern Wei rulers adopted ideas from the old Han dynasty, like government and taxes, while also introducing new things like armor for soldiers and horses, as well as the stirrup. The book also explains how women, especially empresses, became more important in running the government.
